Professor Gibson
Glenn Gibson Ph.D. is Professor of Microbiology and Head of the Food Microbial Sciences Unit at the
University of Reading.
Professor Gibson received his Ph.D. at the University of Dundee in 1986. He has since held numerous high profile positions including:
- Postdoctoral research fellow, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Dundee and the Scottish Marine Biological Association, Oban.
- Research microbiologist at the MRC Dunn Clinical Nutrition Centre, Cambridge.
- Head of Microbiology Department, BBSRC Institute of Food Research, Earley Gate, Reading.
Professor Gibson has authored around 250 full length research articles, including 5 books, on human gut
bacteria and given over 250 invited lectures. Current research interests include the role of sulphate-reducing
bacteria in inflammatory bowel disease, health and disease outcomes of gut microbiology and the application of
molecular techniques to colonic bacteriology. He is also currently carrying out specific research projects on
the molecular genotyping of gut bacteria, diet and cancer, the molecular biology of bifidobacteria, colonic
gas metabolism, the role of gut bacteria in lipid reduction, H2S production and colonic homeostasis.
Professor Gibson is a member of 5 professional societies and senior editor of the Journal of Applied
Microbiology. He was awarded the 1991 WH Pierce Memorial Prize for bacteriology. He is a founder member and
Vice President of the International Society for Probiotics and Prebiotics.
